Nne he will not settle for the manor house alone He will have the lady and her heart into the bargainYet Anne has a secret that must be kept from him at all cost. Nicola Cornick’s Historical epic is set during the English Civil War and concentrates on the relationship between a female aristocrat – whose family is a supporter of the Royalist cause – and a soldier fighting for Parliament whose orders are to seize her home at any cost With a stunning central premise like that the book could almost write itself but Nicola Cornick keeps a tight hold on the reins all the way through and the result is a pacy excellently written novel that draws the reader in and leaves them breathless throughout The uality of the writing in the book is top notch and the author has obviously been doing her history homework; the narrative is dotted with period details that don’t get in the way but instead add to the authenticity of the time period The romance between Anne and Simon is very well handled and packed with conflict The author weaves her story so well that none of it is predictable and as a result the reader is never uite sure where it will end Plenty of twists mysteries and surprises keep the reader guessing throughout and add bucketloads of suspense to the storylineNicola also uses the book to examine the conflicts brought about by the onset of the war looking at the ways in which loyalties and close relationships were torn apart by the division of the country’s allegiance Lord Greville’s Captive has plenty to say about this period of history and by the time the book finishes the reader feels like they have really learnt something about what it was like to have been alive during this period as well as having followed the central characters through their turbulent relationship and shared it with them every step of the way For this reason the book deserves the highest accolades
