I completely enjoyed this I wasn't sure what to expect all the reviews were in Finnish but I know that I love books with fairy tale twists and I adore mysterythrillers Plus I haven't read enough The first chapter made me dubious but then INTRODUCING Lumikki And the book escalated to awesome It's written in a thrillermystery style So there's POVs than just Lumikki and it's in 3rd person I'm not keen on multiple POVs I just don't connect to characters you only see for half a second I'd rather the mystery unwind in just Lumikki's POV but that's kind of impossible right In a way it IS exciting for the readers to know about the mystery and then the tension escalates as you see what the badies are going to do but the characters don't know Ohhh HOLD ME I'm going to choke on my bitter black coffee Lumikki is an excellent main character She's the kind of girl I'd like to be friends with She's alone but not lonely She's 100% capable in most situations and she's smart She also has a plot twist at the end to do with her personality and character that I didn't see coming Woah And then there's this uote For her a day of pampering meant comic books black liuorice serious exercise veggie curry and above all solitude Ah 'scuse me a minute because I think I just found my twin And since I connected really really well to Lumikki the book just escalated to awesome in a heartbeat The mystery was a little confusing for me I haven't read a lot of mysteries or crime fiction so maybe this is just me It's only 300 pages and it's fast moving and simply written I had no reason to get lost But there's still a few facts I'm fuzzy on Like view spoiler why exactly did they need to get into that party hide spoiler

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for teens this international bestseller is a thrilling edge of your seat Nordic noir that chills to the bone and not just because of the bleak winter settingLumikki Andersson has made it a rule to stay out of things that do not involve her She knows all too well that trouble comes to those who stick their nose w. If I was a teenager or maybe even early 20's I would probably give this book 4 stars or possibly even 4 12 But as an adult and a writer there were a great many details in plot and writing style that bugged me and I feel 3 stars is being slightly generous It is difficult to know whether these annoyances are because of the author herself or because of the translation which can sometimes screw things up I am trying to be fair hereAs with all the books I receive through 's Kindle First program a choice between four books each month before they are published I stepped into this one extremely wary and ready to set it down before I got too deep The fact that I did not set it down is a huge plus for Salla Simukka As a whole I enjoyed the story Simukka has a vivid imagination and a wonderful eye for detail She writes with clarity showing the scenes and actions and only leaving out what she wants to show later She kept me captivated and interested even through the problems I had with it And I do like how Simukka uses classic fairy tale references even though that has been getting a bit old lately She made it uniue enough for me to not groan Oh not another fairy telling retellingWhat annoyed me most was Simukka's attempt to create her own Lisbeth Salander with main character Lumikki Andersson Lumikki even says once as a joke I'm the secret love child of Hercule Poirot and Lisbeth Salander It is amusing and good of Simukka to acknowledge her inspirations and pay respects where they are due but I feel she should have gone for a uniue character instead of using someone else's At seventeen Lumikki seems too good to be true too knowledgeable too perceptive too lucky She gets herself into a number of tight situations no pun intended and escapes from them with ease and grace like a Finnish Robert Langdon She is too un believable and the fact that three teenagers are able to outmaneuver mafia bosses and henchmen at every turn made it too difficult for me to take this story seriously I do try to keep in consideration though that this was written for a younger audienceMy other nitpicking's are minor and have to do with Simukka's writing or the translator's translating There are uite a few unnecessary repetitions throughout the book and some awkwardly written sentences which brought me out of the scene and my imagination as I had to stop and reread it to gather the full meaning Also there are a few instances where Simukka uses multiple different sentences in a paragraph that essentially say the same thing This usually interrupted the flow and pacing which are otherwise very well done

Hmmm I uite like this one When I initially picked up AS RED AS BLOOD the first issue I ran into believe it or not was the fact that it was pitched as Six of Crows meets Girl with the Dragon Tattoo And I know that pitches are usually so very off and that they mean nothing but the comparison to SoC amade me miss that series so much and bgave me the impression that AS RED AS BLOOD was either very confident or is going to be setting itself up for failure Apparently ARaB is very confident but has absolutely NOTHING to do with SoC The comparison is misplaced so do not go into this one thinking the two books are in any way similar Another misconception I had was that this was going to be a Snow White retelling but as a thriller NOPE The book seemed to be begging me to Just sit down Nina because today is not your dayYeah I'm not sure if I put too much faith into this book or if I just thought up a million dollar idea by mistake Who knows But misconceptions aside I uite enjoyed this one The first chapter is exciting short and snappy and it has this in medias res feel to it almost a style that I ADORE Lummikki is an amazing lead She's a bit introverted and shy but she's very curious Curious enough to put her life on the line investigating someone else's case which I really don't get honestly but interesting just the same Oh and this is translated from Finnish And I believe the translator did a pretty good job because the writing for the most part flows nicely As compared to my other 2017 translated read WONDERFUL FEELS LIKE THIS by Sara Lövestam translated from Swedish whose translations were about as smooth as sandpaper So as you can imagine I was a bit worried going into AS RED AS BLOOD but thankfully the English wasn't choppy YayOverall Nice uick and easy read if thrillers and mysteries are your thing Thank you Penguin for sending me a review copy in exchange for my honest review
